Diarrhea

If you have diarrhea for more than two days you should contact us for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

What causes diarrhea?

Everyone has diarrhea from time to time, but if your loose, watery stools last for more than two days or if you have severe abdominal or rectal pain or black or bloody stools, you should talk to us about your symptoms.

The most common causes of diarrhea are viral and bacterial infections. However, your body may also respond to certain medications, lactose, fructose, and artificial sweeteners with diarrhea.

In some cases, diarrhea is a symptom of gastrointestinal conditions such as Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, ulcerative colitis (UC), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

When should I talk to a doctor about diarrhea?

You should make an appointment with us if you have diarrhea for more than two days. Other signs that you should consult a doctor include:

  • Severe abdominal or rectal pain
  • Blood in your stool
  • Black bowel movements
  • A fever above 101℉

Diarrhea can lead to dehydration. If you notice that you’re excessively thirsty, have little to no urine output, or are weak or dizzy, you may be dehydrated.

How is the cause of diarrhea diagnosed?

We take chronic diarrhea seriously. They provide comprehensive consultations, talking to you about your personal and family medical history, your lifestyle, and your symptoms.

In most cases we might begin the evaluation by ordering blood and stool tests to check for indicators of the cause of your diarrhea.
